Scott Oatley is a Research Fellow at University College London (UCL), London, UK. Before this position, Scott has worked at the University of Manchester as Research Associate at the University of Manchester working on the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA). Scott completed his PhD in 2025 that focused on 'Youth in Transition'. His PhD examined the role structural inequality has upon choice and opportunity on youth's first transition from school-to-work.
His current work is focused on two Nuffield foundation grants. The first project seeks to assess school climate and pupil belonging, attendance and achievement. The second project focuses on an racial inequalities in access to professional careers.
His research interests relate to social stratification, social class, and social mobility. The key substantive focus of Scott's research is the sociology of social stratification. His research agenda draws on a range of quantitative methodological techniques, including but not limited to: logistic regression, continuation ratio models, sensitivity analysis, and multiple imputation. Scott's research mainly uses longitudinal birth cohort data.
